What is the Development Cost of an app??

How Much Does It Really Cost to Build Your App?
A practical guide for founders, from the team at Clentr
"How much will my app cost?"
It's the question we hear most from founders, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you're building. Software doesn't come with a fixed price tag. A simple prototype and a full-scale product are completely different projects.
This guide breaks down exactly what it depends on, so you can walk into any conversation with a developer knowing what to expect.
It's based on what we've learned launching 4 of our own apps on the App Store and helping founders build products worth over $10k.
Think of It Like Building a House
| House | App |
|---|---|
| Design & interiors | UI/UX: how it looks and feels |
| Number of rooms | Features: what it can do |
| Foundation | Backend: how much it can handle as you grow |
| Location & permits | Platform & compliance: iOS, Android, web, payments, data rules |
A one-room studio and a 5-bedroom villa are both "houses," but nobody expects them to cost the same. Before you can price a house, you need a blueprint. Apps are no different.
The 5 Things That Decide Your App's Cost
1. UI/UX Complexity
- Simple: standard screens, clean layouts, ready-made components
- Medium: custom design, branding, smooth animations
- Complex: highly custom interactions, dashboards, real-time visuals
2. Feature Set
Every feature is a "room." Common ones that add cost:
- User sign-up / login (email, Google, Apple)
- Payments & subscriptions
- Chat or real-time messaging
- Push notifications
- Maps & location tracking
- File, image or video uploads
- Admin panel to manage users & content
- AI features (chatbots, recommendations, content generation)
- Third-party integrations (CRMs, calendars, APIs)
3. Backend & Scalability
- Is this for 100 users or 100,000?
- Does data need to sync in real time?
- Do you need high security (health, finance, kids' data)?
A foundation built for a cottage won't hold a skyscraper. But you also don't need a skyscraper's foundation on day one. Build for where you'll realistically be in the next 6–12 months.
4. Platforms
- Web only: usually the cheapest way to start
- iOS or Android only: focused and fast
- Both (cross-platform): frameworks like Flutter or React Native keep this efficient
- Web + iOS + Android: the full package, and the highest cost
5. Who Builds It
- No-code tools: very cheap to start, but limited as you grow
- Freelancer: lower cost, but you manage design, development and testing yourself
- Product team: design, development, testing and project management under one roof
💡 How we approach this at Clentr: Most founders we work with don't need the biggest possible build. They need the right build. Our job is to match the foundation to your stage, so you're not overpaying for scale you don't need yet, or rebuilding six months later because you cut the wrong corners.
So… What's the Realistic Range?
These are rough ballparks. Your real number depends on your exact requirements.
| Tier | What You Get | Rough Budget |
|---|---|---|
| Starter / Prototype | Landing page, clickable prototype, or a simple no-code app to test your idea | ~$100 – $1,000 |
| MVP | A working product with core features, real users, basic backend | ~$1,000 – $10,000 |
| Full Product | Custom design, multiple platforms, payments, admin panel, built to scale | $10,000+ |
Whether you build for $100, $1,000 or $10,000 is up to you. It comes down to what you need right now.
Start With an MVP, Not the Dream Version
The most expensive mistake founders make is trying to build everything in version 1.
An MVP (Minimum Viable Product) is the smallest version of your app that solves the core problem for your users. It helps you:
- Launch faster
- Spend less upfront
- Learn what users actually want before investing more
Build the studio first. Add rooms once people move in.
This is the core of what we do at Clentr: taking messy, ambitious ideas and shaping them into focused MVPs that can launch, get real users, and scale when the time is right.
Your Pre-Estimate Checklist
Answer these before talking to any developer, including us. You'll get a far more accurate quote.
- What problem does your app solve, in one sentence?
- Who is your target user?
- What are the 3–5 must-have features for launch?
- Which features can wait for version 2?
- Web, iOS, Android, or all three?
- Do you need payments or subscriptions?
- How many users do you expect in the first 6 months?
- Are there apps similar to yours? (Screenshots or links help a lot.)
- What's your budget range?
- When do you want to launch?
Can't Answer All of These? That's Normal.
If you're a non-tech founder, turning an idea into a clear list of requirements can feel overwhelming. You know what you want to exist, but not how to describe it in a way a developer can price.
That's what scoping is for. A good scoping process helps you:
- Define your features and user flows
- Choose the right tech stack for your stage
- Break the project into phases you can afford
- Get a realistic cost and timeline before you commit
Most development teams charge for scoping as a separate service.
At Clentr, scoping is free for founders who commit to building with us. We'd rather spend that time getting your plan right than billing you for it.
What Working With Clentr Looks Like
- A quick call: you tell us the idea, messy or not. No tech knowledge needed.
- Scoping: we turn it into clear features, flows, and a phased plan.
- A clear estimate: cost and timeline based on your requirements, not a generic package.
- Build & launch: we design, develop, and ship your MVP.
- Scale: once real users arrive, we help you add the next rooms.
